Secretary to the Treasury Felix Nkulukusa said it is important for countries to strengthen cooperation in addressing pressing issues that have plagued development efforts in many countries.

He made the remarks at the start of a consultative meeting in preparation for Zambia’s participation in the Summit of the Future to be held in September, a high-level event that will bring together world leaders to forge a new international consensus on how to deliver a better present and safeguard the future.

This year’s event will also address critical issues, including major global shocks that have impacted the economies of many countries, including Zambia.

Nkulukusa said the UN is crucial in helping countries bolster domestic initiatives by enlisting the aid of allies such as young people, the private sector, and civil society organizations.

While acknowledging that the summit has specific aspirations and goals in responding to new issues, the official said the overall goal should be to expedite efforts to fulfill current international obligations, such as the SDGs.

“The Summit of the Future is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges, address gaps in global governance, and reaffirm existing commitments, including those of the SDGs,” said UN Resident Coordinator in Zambia Beatrice Mutali.

She said the summit will also help the world move toward a reinvigorated multilateral system that is better positioned to positively impact people’s lives.
